Project Summary

Background

In the summer of 2018, I attended a 12-week course teaching creative coding, or the skill of using code to generate and create art. They taught an overview of creative technology languages with an emphasis on open source technologies.

Assignment

The course culminated in an exhibit where students were asked to exhibit a piece of artwork using some of the skills developed in the course.

Exploration

I wanted deliver a parable or game-like metaphor.

I experimented with an interactive game that used a metaphor of an apple tree and farming to represent the common goods.

I arrived at a turning point when I recognized that a more direct sense of loss of common value would be through money itself. I used money (dollar bills) as part of the interactive mechanism to produce a more tangible sense of economy.

Solution

Materials: Arduino, Personal sacred objects, Found objects, Wood scraps, Load scale, Projection map, Web Browser, Time-lapse video of flower blooming, Javascript, Dollar Bills (each one weighs 1 gram), Sharpie
